STC/MS Physical Science Modules

Properties of Matter

In this STC/MS physical science unit, students investigate characteristic properties of matter such as density, boiling and freezing points, and solubility and utilize these properties to identify substances. Later they use the characteristic properties to separate mixtures into pure substances, and investigate the interaction of compounds and elements.

Light

Students investigate the behavior of light and its dual nature as particles and waves, beginning with the movement of light, the formation of shadows, and the reflection and refraction of light by mirrors, prisms, and lenses. Students apply these principles in the design of optical devices such as periscopes, pinhole cameras, telescopes, and microscopes. The module concludes with investigations of color and wave motion, using a ripple tank as a model for exploring wave phenomena.
