Mexico Conference on Research Related to Science Education Vol. 12, No. 2, Fall/Winter 2001 Mexico Conference Furthers International Working Relationships The International Working Conference on Research Related to Science Education had no sooner begun on September 11 in Monterrey, Mexico, when news of the terrorist strikes against U.S. targets reached the conferees. After reassuring themselves that loved ones back home had not been harmed in the attacks, the participants returned to the meeting site. During the following two days, participants from the United States, Sweden, France, and Chile joined their Mexican hosts in sharing information about the science education models and programs that they use in their countries. Topics included a vision for learning and teaching science, assessment of student learning, professional development, and the role of national science academies in implementing inquiry-centered science education. The conference paved the way for further international cooperation in funding for research on the impact of science education, particularly in Latin America. Representing the NSRC at the meeting were Executive Director Sally Goetz Shuler, other NSRC staff members, and representatives from NSRC partnerships.—J.B. |
