Dr. Thomas Emrick Named Publisher of National Science Resources Center Released Date: January 5, 2009 Location: Washington, DC The National Science Resources Center has named Dr. Thomas A. Emrick as its new Publisher, effective January 5, 2009. The NSRC, headquartered in Washington, D.C., was established in 1985 by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academies. Its mission is to improve the learning and teaching of science for all students in the United States and throughout the world. The NSRC collects and disseminates information about exemplary science teaching resources, disseminates research-based science curriculum materials, and helps school systems improve their K–12 science education programs based on research and best practices. In his new position, Dr. Emrick will create, develop and market our science education curriculum; strengthen the brand identity for these materials; and publish internal and external organization publications. "Joining the NSRC is wonderful opportunity for me to focus my energies on the organization's mission of improving science education, not only from the product side, but from the instructional side as well. Since the early days of my career as a classroom teacher, science education has been extremely important to me. Never before in our history has the success of this mission been more significant to the future of all of our students," Emrick said. Emrick comes to the NSRC from Buckle Down Publishing in Iowa City, Iowa, where he served as President since 2004. While there, he redesigned workflow for all product development and nearly tripled net revenue in three years. Prior to his tenure at Buckle Down, Emrick was also in leadership roles in other publishing firms such as Centre Point Learning, South-Western Educational Publishing and Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company. In these positions, he managed the development of science education curriculum for grades K-8, created new strategies for publishing materials, and directed over 1,700 contracts. The NSRC is very excited to have Tom on board as the new Publisher and is enthusiastic about the new ideas he will bring to the organization. |
